(...) Die Kraft der Utopien scheint heute stark nachgelassen zu haben. In den Zeiten der "Postmoderne" gelten Utopien bestenfalls als ideologieverdächtige Relikte der großen "Meta-Erzählungen" (J.-F. Lyotard} der Vergangenheit. Freilich kommt keine Musik, die mehr sein will als funktionelle akustische Kulisse, ohne utopisches Denken aus; alle ernst zunehmende Musik baut Gegenwelten auf, bricht auf in neue Ordnungen.

Um dieses Spannungsverhältnis kreist das Werk
des Komponisten Volker Blumenthaler.

Seine Musik folgt weder den ausgetretenen Pfaden der etablierten Trends neuer Musik, noch schließt sie sich den postmodernen Belanglosigkeiten des "anything goes" an. Auf eine ganz eigene Weise stellt sich Blumenthaler dem Zerfall der gesellschaftlichen und künstlerischen Utopien. (...) Doch selbst in diesem Zerfall bleiben dennoch Elemente des Utopischen erhalten. Die Momente des Zerfallens und des Zerfaserns gewinnen strukturell an Gewicht. Sie manifestieren sich in der gestalthaften Ordnung des Kunstwerks selbst. (...)

(...) The power of utopian ideas seems to be less powerful today. In the times of the "post-modernisme" these ideas will be considered as ideological relicts of the great "meta-narrations" (J.-F. Lyotard) of history. Of Course no music, which will be more as a functionally acustical background, could exist without any utopian ideas; all serious music builds up counterworlds, rises up into new orders.

The work of Volker Blumenthaler circles round these relations.

His music neither follows the paths of established trends of New Music nor the "post-modern-triviality of "anything goes". In his own way Blumenthaler stands against the decay of utopian ideas of society and culture. (...) Nevertheless elements of those ideas will sustain these moments of decay and falling apart and gradually take on a structural significance. They manifest themselves in the gestalt and the order of the work of art. (...)
